A database of initiatives working on Green Deal topics in Europe

How are initiatives throughout Europe already working on areas related to the Green Deal? In the SHARED GREEN DEAL database, you will find an overview of European initiatives working on Green Deal topics. By clicking on an initiative in the database, you can learn more about their actions, the type of actors working on it and the diversity of Green Deal topic areas they are active in.

The database was developed in an iterative and co-creative way in 2022. It entailed different phases of conceptualising, mapping, and refining with and by consortium partners. The SHARED GREEN DEAL consortium identified initiatives to include in the database, using desk-research through public web documentation of the initiatives. This means that – although we have prioritised geographical diversity – some countries have more initiatives represented than others.

We have specified the initiatives’ actions along three types of activities: doing, thinking, or organising (based on the work of Avelino et al., 2019; Barnes et al., 2018 and Wittmayer et al., 2022):

  • We understand ‘doing’ as actions resulting in physical changes of the system in the initiative is operating in (i.e. generate electricity, growing crops).
  • ‘Thinking’ is conceptualised as actions around generating and spreading knowledge. It concerns actions regarding normative framings, values and perceptions (i.e. educating visitors of a rooftop farm on the importance of biodiversity, or doing research with a local community on plastic pollution).
  • ‘Organising’ is understood as actions related to governance and organisational structures within initiatives and the systems in which they work (i.e. organising a meeting place to facilitate other social experiments to come together to exchange ideas, or facilitating an online platform to exchange and reuse materials)

We hope this database will be useful for initiatives looking for inspirations on how their actions can contribute to the Green Deal and policy makers interested in how initiatives throughout Europe are pushing the Green Deal forward.

Do you have any comments, feedback or reflections about the database? Feel free to send an e-mail to info@sharedgreendeal.eu using the title ‘SHARED GREEN DEAL Database’ in your email, and we’ll be in contact with you shortly.

"More than Energy" movement

The "More than Energy" movement is a broad social coalition working for the development of civic energy. It brings together local governments, institutions, non-governmental organizations and individuals convinced that Poland needs to improve energy efficiency and develop distributed energy based on renewable sources (RES). It postulates the creation of conditions for the active participation of individuals and institutions as well as enterprises from outside the energy sector in investments in RES and in activities aimed at improving energy efficiency. The construction of civic energy in Poland requires fair, transparent and effective regulatory mechanisms supporting investment in both the area of electricity and heat production. We also call for improving the energy efficiency of households to be treated as a priority for national investment and aid programmes.

#Building Life

#BuildingLife is a project convening ten European Green Building Councils to deliver the European Green Deal. These Green Building Councils will galvanise climate action through national and regional decarbonisation roadmaps, which will tackle the whole-life environmental impacts of the building and construction sector. #BuildingLife focuses not only on the operational emissions of buildings, but also the environmental impact of the manufacturing, transportation, construction, and end-of-life phases – often called embodied emissions. Tackling these emissions is essential to address the total impact of the built environment, and progress towards the European Green Deal’s aim of a climate neutral Europe by 2050.

A city without cars

Our model defends the idea that the total number of cars that are needed for the city to function properly is far lower than people think. Suppressing indiscriminate parking in central streets is one of the key measures that makes it possible to mitigate the effects of traffic jams and the abuse of the passenger car. The new mobility model encourages destination traffic and prevents search and through-traffic with the enforcement of active dissuasive measures. Search traffic may be prevented by regulating indiscriminate parking. Most streets in the inner ring are under constant police surveillance and follow a free-of-charge service-focused parking scheme. There are about 3,500 parking spaces available free of charge throughout the perimeter of the inner ring –a 10-minute walk from the center– and almost 4,500 underground paid parking spaces in the city.

AdieÖl

[translated] Upper Austria has set itself a clear goal: We want to "get out of heating with oil". Despite great progress in recent years (more than 60% of space heating already comes from renewable energy sources and district heating), there are still over 100,000 oil-heated households in Upper Austria. In addition to the ban on oil heating in new buildings and the incentives for the replacement of oil heating systems, additional impulses are necessary to accelerate the replacement of heating systems. AdieuÖl is a comprehensive information and activity package. Everyone in Upper Austria can participate - municipalities, schools, private individuals, associations and companies - even if they do not heat with oil!

AdvocaCY: Participate, learn, challenge, decide: stronger Cypriot Civil Society for sustainability, advocacy and change!

The aim of this proposal is to create synergies and join forces among CSOs and informal groups and to build networks of active citizens across the divide. The project has a solution-oriented approach which leads to the achievement of two targets: (1) build skills and capacity, raise awareness and promote advocacy among citizens for their right to a sustainable environment as set by SDGs (2) to boost bi-communal cooperation on promoting sustainability, an issue that affects both communities and is a win-win field of cooperation. In so doing, transform this collaboration into a peace building tool. The overall result of the project will be its demonstrable (through KPIs) contribution to a stronger and more sustainable civil society on the island, greater bicommunal cooperation and intercultural dialogue, and more active citizens.

Amsterdam City Doughnut

Based on the model of Raworth (Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist,; published in 2017). The inner ring of the doughnut sets out the minimum we need to lead a good life, derived from the UN’s sustainable development goals and agreed by world leaders of every political stripe. It ranges from food and clean water to a certain level of housing, sanitation, energy, education, healthcare, gender equality, income and political voice. Anyone not attaining such minimum standards is living in the doughnut’s hole. The outer ring of the doughnut, where the sprinkles go, represents the ecological ceiling drawn up by earth-system scientists. It highlights the boundaries across which human kind should not go to avoid damaging the climate, soils, oceans, the ozone layer, freshwater and abundant biodiversity. Between the two rings is the good stuff: the dough, where everyone’s needs and that of the planet are being met. The central premise is simple: the goal of economic activity should be about meeting the core needs of all but within the means of the planet. The “doughnut” is a device to show what this means in practice. Raworth scaled down the model to provide Amsterdam with a “city portrait” showing where basic needs are not being met and “planetary boundaries” overshot. It displays how the issues are interlinked. In 2020 Amsterdam was the first city to apply the doughnut at local level. ANew Institute

ANew Institute aims to establish reliable and effective partnerships with local wind energy companies as well as wind turbine suppliers and producers in all wind energy markets. We'd love to hear about your planned wind farms or other wind energy projects! Our technology is aerodynamically scalable, and ANew Institute can provide wind turbines of various sizes and configurations to maximize energy production. Current wind farm operators with propeller turbines will be able to increase the production rates of their wind farms and increase the utilization of existing infrastructure, adding ANew Turbines in the "gaps" between those based on propellers. Using our turbines will also enable energy production in areas previously considered as "too low wind" for commercial purposes. We believe that local wind turbine installers and suppliers are best prepared to make our technology available to new customers. We have developed a licensing structure that allows local companies to produce, sell, install and service ANW Institute VAWTs.

Apple Reserve is an innovative juice business that makes use of traditional apple varieties such as Antonówka, Kronselska or from traditional orchards, respecting the Polish countryside landscape, local ecosystems, biodiversity, circularity, in the spirit of less-waste. The founders were driven by the need for alternatives to large-scale monocultures often seen in modern agriculture, and to find a way to offer an alternative product to address the high quality soft drinks market. ”We do not discuss with nature, we take what it offers us; in this way, every year we collect unique apples, which, depending on the nature, we have sometimes more and sometimes less”.

Associação Terra Sintrópica

Associação Terra Sintrópica is located in Mértola, a town in southeastern Alentejo with a semi-arid climate and high vulnerability to desertification and climate change. It is a region with a dry climate, with high summer temperatures and one of the regions most affected by drought in all of Europe, an aspect severely aggravated by all climate scenarios. With these conditions, it is not surprising that Mértola is among the regions of Europe most susceptible to desertification. The vulnerability described above, induces severe limitations not only to agricultural activity, but also to other economic activities, such as tourism, which is affected by climatic comfort, which leads to high economic weakness that accelerates migration and depopulation. This vicious circle of resource degradation and depopulation is difficult to break. And it is with this conjecture that the Associação Terra Sintrópica was born in November 2018. Despite these climatic limitations or perhaps because of its existence, Mértola is also a territory of resilience, creativity and high social capital. Values intrinsic to this association that tries to transform these weaknesses into strengths and make this territory a territory-experience for new solutions. Projects include a Nursery and Garden of Forgotten Varieties - horticultural varieties, herbaceous perennials, fruit trees and medicinal herbs used in the territory of Al-Andalus, including native species or species that have been introduced and disseminated since the Islamic period - and Forest Gardens - promotion of vegetable gardens in schools, according to the principles of syntropic agriculture, with the aim of promoting regenerative productive practices and a greater connection between future consumers and agroecological production.

[translated] The car fasting campaign is an initiative of the environmental officers of the Catholic and Protestant Churches in Austria, which calls on people to shape their own mobility behavior in the direction of sustainability in order to preserve a future worth living for future generations. The idea is to try out environmentally and health-friendly alternatives to driving during Lent (02.03. - 16.04.2022), i.e. not to drive at all or to drive significantly less and instead to use trains, buses, bicycles, feet, carpools, etc.

autofreier StadTraum Bremen e.V.

[translated] We have the dream of a city that is fit for human beings, characterised by spaces for young and old to play and meet, clean air, less noise and fair, social and climate-friendly interaction between all transport participants. We are working hard for a better quality of life in Bremen, for more social interaction, for our health and climate protection, for a forward-looking coexistence with alternative ideas for mobility in jointly designed urban space. At the moment, this is still a utopia, but we are committed to getting a little closer to this ideal.

Avinguda del Vallès

Avinguda del Vallès is a project in the periphery of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area that aims to redesign a 6.5 kilometre stretch of the N-150 trunk road between Montcada i Reixac, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Ripollet and Barberà del Vallès as a new civic, green and commercial corridor, with strong public transport links. The project has therefore undertaken an exhaustive participation process, in which citizens and institutions have cocreated both the diagnosis of the site and the proposal of the actions to be carried out. This process has enabled a rethinking of a better future for this section of the N-150 road, as well as the development of a test bed for “metropolitan avenues” – a key concept in the future Metropolitan Urban Master Plan for Barcelona, towards a more connected and liveable metropolis.

B-Water Smart

The water sector in coastal areas is facing a couple of challenges such as water scarcity and increasing water demands due to climate change and economic and population growth. This can lead to overexploitation of resources, quality deterioration and regional imbalances in the availability of water resources. To tackle these challenges, the European research project building a water-smart society and economy, short B-WaterSmart, develops and demonstrates smart technologies and circular economy approaches. In order to implement those solutions more strongly in the practice of the water sector, technical and digital solutions as well as new business models are jointly developed by the project partners. The aim is to accelerate the transformation to water-smart economies and societies in coastal Europe and beyond by reducing the use of freshwater resources, improving the recovery and reuse of resources, and increase water use efficiency.

Barcelona Superblocks

This simple idea is based on blocks, initially named “supermanzanas” (super apples), that are smaller in size than a district (but bigger than an apple!). These new 400mx400m urban blocks have given the city back to the citizens by keeping car traffic on the outskirts of each block. This urban development creates a peaceful, more spacious inner area, ideal for cycling and walking as well as testing new uses that encourage social cohesion and economic development. Superblocks are new urban organisational units, with a size of around 400 x 400 m, comprised of several smaller blocks [1]. They are fringed by peripheral roads open for motorized traffic, while interior roads are closed to through traffic but open (by using a system of cards and bollards) to residents, public transport, disabled people, emergency vehicles and, in some streets, bicycles. In this way, the interior public or common areas are relieved of redundant traffic, thus leading to traffic calming of interior roads. Consequently, the areas can be recovered for other uses and thus returned back to inhabitants of the area. The process of stakeholder participation is there by intended to ensure that all the solutions are implemented according to the needs of inhabitants.

The bees are only a starting point in the discussion about the role and structure of the city as such.
