Goal
In Tartu the Vabaduse street was in 1939 a marketplace, but it was rebuilt by 1957 as car dominated Freedom avenue as it remained until today. Car free intervention in the summer of 2020: 27% liked it and wanted permanent, 48% liked it as temporary intervention, 25 % did not like it at all. After the 2021 success in 2022 the project is extended to other streets. Vabaduse has the heaviest traffic in the city, few years ago it was unthinkable to take lanes away. The city of Tartu is preparing a new general plan, and the goal is to develop principles and record the necessary activities for building the city's green infrastructure for the next decades. In particular, the focus is on creating a healthy and livable urban environment - cooling solutions, reducing noise and air pollutants.
