Name
Implementation of the PAYT system in waste management in Guimarães
country
Portugal
Goal
"The Municipality of Guimarães together with the Municipal Company Vitrus Ambiental implemented in 2016 the PAYT system in the Historic Centre area of Guimarães, with approximately 800 users, with the main objectives being the increase of selective collection, the reduction of waste production, and the implementation of the user-pays principle through the indexation of the tariff to the respective production, without being associated with another factor, as is usually the case, or to water consumption or to the occupation area." The aim of the project: to fill a gap that is evident in the management of municipal waste in Portugal, more so because of the differentiating and unique nature of the possibility of implementing it in a Historic Centre, a World Cultural Heritage Site. The Municipality of Guimarães began the implementation of this totally innovative system in January 2016, having been the first municipality to achieve this objective, through the indexation of the waste tariff to the respective waste production.
